Guide to Police Checks in Victoria

A skyline view of Melbourne, Victoria, where individuals and businesses may require a police check or background screening for employment, licensing, or compliance purposes

With an increasing nationwide focus on safety and security, together with the tightening of various industry compliance requirements, many people now undergo mandatory police checks and other background checks in Victoria – whether it is for employment, licencing, or probity.

We believe it helps to know what types of information might show up when you’re having a police check undertaken on you, so the purpose of this blog post is to provide information on police checks in Victoria.

Why might someone need police checks in Victoria?

Individuals can apply for a National Police Check with Victoria Police. A National Police Check with Victoria Police may differ slightly from a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check (NCCHC) undertaken through the National Police Checking Service.

Some of the key reasons you may apply to Victoria Police for a National Police Check include:

  • You require a National Police Certificate – Certain roles or organisations that require you to source a police check may require you to present a National Police Certificate from an Australian police service with the necessary security features;
  • You require a fingerprint record check – If you’re required to source a set of your fingerprints as part of a police check (such as with a police check for a firearm licence), you’ll most likely need to attend your local Victoria Police police station;
  • The purpose of the criminal record check is for use in Victoria only – Certain industries or purposes may require Victoria Police to undertake your police check, rather than through other sources or states.

If you don’t require a National Police Certificate, InterCheck Global Pty Ltd can assist you and is an accredited agency with the National Police Checking Service to provide Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Checks and other background checks.
